Mid Bay: 2011

Poor ecosystem health. With the biggest decline since 2010 (-13%), the Mid Bay health decreased due to considerable declines in chlorophyll a, water clarity, and phytoplankton community scores.
  • Water quality: All three indicators’ scores declined in 2011. However, dissolved oxygen scores only dropped by 4%, so it stayed in the same moderately good range that it has been in for more than 20 years. Water clarity scores dropped the most, from 26% in 2010 to 7% in 2011. Water clarity scores this year were the lowest ever recorded in the Mid Bay. Chlorophyll a scores also decreased from 25% to 11% in 2011, a very poor score.
  • Biotic indicators: Aquatic grasses and benthic community condition scores slightly declined in 2011, to very poor condition for both indicators. Phytoplankton community condition declined this year by 33% to score the lowest (60%) since 2004. This indicator continues to be variable over time.
