Overall Bay: 2011

Poor ecosystem health. The overall health of the Bay declined for the second year in a row, from 42% in 2010 to 38% in 2011. Five of the six indicators—dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll a, water clarity, aquatic grasses, and benthic community—declined in score, while phytoplankton community scores increased this year.
  • Water quality: Dissolved oxygen scores decreased from 81% in 2010 to 77% in 2011, and was consistent with the moderately good to good ranking seen for the entire period of record. Chlorophyll a scores declined slightly and water clarity scores sharply declined, both scoring in the very poor range.
  • Biotic Indicators: Biotic indicators showed some variability from 2010. Aquatic grasses decreased by 7% and benthic community condition scores decreased slightly (by 3%). Aquatic grasses condition remained poor, while benthic community dropped to moderately poor condition.  Phytoplankton community scores improved by 6%, remaining in moderate condition.
