Land Ocean Interactions in the Coastal Zone (LOICZ)
This page contains several conceptual diagrams produced by the Integration and Application for the Land Ocean Interactions in the Coastal Zone (LOICZ) project which is a project of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme: A study of Global Change (IGBP) of the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU).
These conceptual diagrams are still evolving as our understanding of these system develops, and as such we welcome input from scientists with experience in these regions and biological systems.
The role of the coastal ocean in the disturbed and undisturbed nutrient and carbon cycles: a management perspective
This report was published by LOICZ with the support of the United Nations Environmental Programme and the Global Environmental Facility (GEF). It provides new assessment tools for coastal management programs and discusses the key science outputs of the project. Science communicators at IAN worked with authors and designers to create nine figures for the 40-page report. These figures described themes ranging from the features of coastal zones to terrestrial nutrient inputs.
The following presentation (in PDF format) is also available
as a background to LOICZ.
LOICZ:
Land-Ocean Interactions in the Coastal Zone
This presentation details
the LOICZ approach, its themes and goals, as well as where it fits
in the International Geosphere Biosphere Program. It addresses approaches
and new techniques that can be used to start solving global coastal
environmental problems. Included are a range of problems, research
findings and solutions, including examples from Australia, Europe,
Asia and Nth America.
Ecosystem Summary Diagrams
These diagrams are now also available on the LOICZ board of the IAN discussion forum. We encourage you to review and comment on the diagrams in the discussion forum so we can encourage further discussion. There is also a board available for more general LOICZ discussion.
