Effects of nutrient enrichment in the nation's estuaries: A decade of change
This report provides an assessment of eutrophic conditions for 141 U.S. estuaries. The report was based on data and information provided by scientists and experts from around the country. Results from the assessment show that two-thirds of the estuaries evaluated exhibited moderate to high levels of eutrophication. Report production was a collaborative effort between Suzanne Bricker (NOAA NCCOS), EcoCheck (NOAA-UMCES Partnership) and IAN. You can also access the individual chapters from the NCCOS website.

National Estuarine Eutrophication Assessment Update
In 1999, NOAA released the first assessment on the effects of nutrient enrichment in the nation’s estuaries - National Estuarine Eutrophication Assessment (NEEA) report. This report has become the founding document for the comparison of US estuarine eutrophication status, heavily used at all levels of management and policy development. The potential for rapid changes in eutrophication status and a requirement for key questions to be answered has been the impetus for updating and enhancing the report by the end of 2005.

National Estuarine Eutrophication Assessment: Effects of Nutrient Enrichment in the Nation's Estuaries 1999
This report is the culmination of almost seven years of effort to assess comprehensively the scale, scope, and characteristics of nutrient enrichment and eutrophic conditions in the nation’s estuaries. It provides the most comprehensive assessment of this issue ever assembled for our nation’s estuaries, and the results represent a significant contribution to the development of a national strategy to control nutrient enrichment problems affecting U.S. coastal waters. With this information, we have the opportunity to make a real difference in the actions this nation takes to address this important issue.

This paper describes an integrated methodology for the Assessment of Estuarine Trophic Status (ASSETS), which may be applied comparatively to rank the eutrophication status of estuaries and coastal areas, and to address management options.

National Estuarine Eutrophication Assessment Update
