RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
| 2002 | Arizona Geological Survey – Research Assistant – Tucson, Arizona Ms. Florkowski assisted in a study of the effects of fire on soil geochemistry in semi-arid grasslands, which later became the basis for my Undergraduate Thesis. She received a Summer Research Fellowship for Undergraduates from the University of Virginia to support my work. Ms. Florkowski was based at the Arizona Geological Survey in Tucson, Arizona; however the research was performed at the Fort Huachuca gunnery ranges in southeastern Arizona. While in the field, she laid out sample plots and collected soil samples for the second year of sample collection. When in the laboratory, she performed analysis on the samples collected the previous year. Soil samples were analyzed for nitrogen, phosphorus, total organic carbon, and pH. Ms. Florkowski’s Undergraduate Thesis describes the results of the 2001 soil analysis. |
TEACHING EXPERIENCE
| 2004 | Teaching Assistant: Orphaned Lands Assessment – Charlottesville, Virginia Ms. Florkowski assisted students conducting site visits to abandoned mineral mines throughout Virginia. She also assisted students writing site visit reports for the Virginia Division of Mineral Mining. |
| 2004 | Teaching Assistant: Beaches, Coasts, and Rivers – Charlottesville, Virginia Ms. Florkowski assisted the Professor with PowerPoint lectures for each class. She also assisted the Professor by keeping track of student’s grades and producing final grades as well as answering student’s questions about course materials. |
WORK EXPERIENCE
| 2004- | Tetra Tech EM Inc. – GIS Specialist/Environmental Scientist – Reston, Virginia While working at Tetra Tech, Ms. Florkowski has performed numerous tasks mainly for Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) clients. Most recently, she assisted with the response to the Hurricane Katrina disaster in New Orleans, Louisiana. Ms. Florkowski created maps using ArcGIS 9.x for the sampling and reconnaissance teams to use in the field as well as maps for the EPA On-Scene Coordinators to use in making management decisions. Ms. Florkowski has served as a task lead for a phytotechnology status report update, poster, and online database. She has summarized Superfund decision documents for entry into an online EPA database. Ms. Florkowski has coordinated with vendors and written summary reports of technologies based on vendor information for EPA National Homeland Security Research Center. She has assisted in the creation of a training course for EPA Environmental Performance Track Site Visit Program. Ms. Florkowski has evaluated EPA grants for conformance with EPA Office of Grants and Debarment policy. In addition, she has created grant location maps using ArcGIS 8.x for EPA Office of Environmental Education. For private clients, Ms. Florkowski has conducted site visits, created site plans, and written reports for Phase I Environmental Site Assessments. |
| 2003 | Federal Energy Regulatory Commission – Biological Science Technician – Washington, D.C. Ms. Florkowski worked in the Division of Hydropower Administration and Compliance. She created and presented Microsoft PowerPoint presentations to State officials about the FERC hydropower facilities in their State. Ms. Florkowski utilized Geomedia 5.0 (GIS) to create maps and digitize project boundaries. She trained full-time employees in utilizing graphics in documents and creating PowerPoint presentations. Ms. Florkowski received an award in recognition of outstanding service to the Commision. |
| 2001 | Central Intelligence Agency – Summer Employee – Langley, Virginia Ms. Florkowski assisted full-time employees with their projects by researching and collating materials. Ms. Florkowski’s work required a Secret Security Clearance. |
| 2001-2004 | The Cavalier Daily – Photography Editor – Charlottesville, Virginia Ms. Florkowski volunteered for the student-run newspaper at the University of Virginia. The newspaper has a daily circulation of 10,000. Ms. Florkowski served as Photography Editor for two years (2002-2003) and as Senior Associate Photography Editor for one semester (Spring 2001). She collaborated with 4 senior editors and dozens of writers to create an award-winning daily newspaper. Ms. Florkowski coordinated the training and assignment of 30 40 photographers. She utilized Adobe Photoshop to edit and finalize photographs taken by her and others. Ms. Florkowski received the Nancy Nichols Andrews award in recognition of excellence. |
