Ben,

I am going to send you a Personal Message with one page of the libraries in an AI format with the symbol wrappers removed. The settings are AI version 10 with PDF compatbility and compression turned off. Maybe the new CD13 will handle these options - we'll keep trying and see what we can do.

Hi Adrian,

Nope. The latest AI format won't open.

The message "There was a problem reading the file" is given.

Ben.

Hi,

I was browsing this thread, because I have problems with Corel Draw 13 as well. Did anything happen on this front after Ben's last post? If so, please let me know.

I tried the fish.ai that Adrian posted on July 04, 2005 and that opens fine. After that I downloaded the ai zip file and CD opens something, but then shows an empty graphic.

Any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Maike

Hi Maike,

Good to hear at least that CD13 will open the fish.ai - that means that the CD import filter for ai files is now working properly. The problem you are having with the ai zip file is that all those graphics are in Illustrator symbol format. Would you mind trying the eps zip version and see if that works for you.

We are going to be releasing an update to the libraries in the next couple of months and I will make sure that there is a version normal ai format, not ai symbol format which should solve your problem for sure.

Hopefully the eps version will work for you for now.

Please let me know how it goes.

Thanks,
Adrian

Hi Adrian,

I played around with the eps files, but it does not look good. CD manages to open something, but just shows a grey box with the file's title and "Adobe Illustrator (R) 11"

I also tried Corel Photo-Paint X3 but that gives me I/O read error.
It is not overly crucial for me at the moment, so I just wait for the update. I hope that will get anounced by email alert so I know when it's time to try again.

Thank you,
Maike

Hi Maike,

Thanks for letting me know that the eps version is no better.

All registered users of the symbol libraries will receive an email when the update is ready.

Cheers,
Adrian

Hi Adrian,

I had a play with the library files again, because I'd like to use them in the next couple of months. And somehow some of the eps files work now in Corel Photo-Paint X3. But some of them give me the error:

Error occurred while processing 'file name'. File cannot be opened.

Initially I thought it might depend on the file size, but that does not seem to apply since aquatic plants (8,775kB) work and aquatic megafauna (2,175kB) does not.

Corel Draw X3 still gives me just the grey box.
Do you have any suggestions or an idea when the update will be ready?

Cheers,
Maike

Hi Maike,

I am afraid I still do not have access to any of the Corel products, so testing at my end is not possible. The update to the libraries has been delayed considerably, although I do hope it will be done sometime this year :-)

From looking through our previous testing together, it looks like there was an issue with the symbol wrapper coming from Illustrator. In future versions, I will make sure there is a version which only contains the drawings without this wrapper, but perhaps your best bet at the moment would be to download a trial version of Illustrator from the Adobe website so you can access the symbols you need and transfer them to a format that you can use with Corel.

Sorry I don't have any better news at the moment.

Cheers,
Adrian

Thanks Adrian.

I am using the trial version of Illustrator at the moment and it does a good job. I actually prefer it to Corel, but my university doesn't support it. Anyway, my conceptual diagrams start taking shape. Once the library update is out, I'll give it a go in Corel and report back.

Cheers,
Maike

Hi genius, thanks for the input - I would appreciate know what version of the libraries you imported into Corel - did you use the ai, eps or svg versions?

Thanks,
Adrian

Hi to everybody! Thanks for this useful tool.

I was wondering if anyone was able to import the SVG files to Inkscape. I was able to import them but the process is very slow because there is a lot of symbols and gradients. When I try to ungroup the program most likely crashes. I was able to import one of the smallest files and ungroup, select only one symbol and copy paste to a new SVG but that is not going to work for bigger files and it is extremely time consuming. Your file named "ianfish.svg" worked perfectly with no errors, therfore I would like to know if it possible for you to provide all the library in separate folders with individual symbols (If you can manage a way to export them in Illustrator in auto mode, I don't know how to do that as I do not work with Illustrator :(  ).
Thanks for all

jcurdia,

Sorry you are having trouble with the SVG versions. We are actually about to start uploading all of our symbols into our image library in SVG format, which will make them available in a searchable database. There will also be an option to download each library separately as a zipped folder of individual SVG files. This will probably take some time to complete, but should hopefully solve your problem, as well as making the symbols more accessible in general.

Regards,
Adrian

We finally have all out symbols in our image library and we also have our new custom download builder ready at http://ian.umces.edu/symbols/

So, now you can download all the symbols (or a custom set) as individual SVG files categorized into album and category folders. I know this version works well with Inkscape. Hopefully it should also work for CorelDraw.

I would love some feedback from any Corel users.
