You need to have stuffit expander installed on your computer to expand the .sit archive, then you will be able to open the files contained within the archive. .sit files used to be a common archive format on Macs - it seems that these days, .zip is more common, so I will probable remove the .sit versions for the next update of the libraries.

Let me know if you still have trouble.

Adrian

Hi, I've downloaded both the .svg and the full .ai for MAC in .sit. I do have stuffitexpander. Every download results in a gobbledy-gook text file. I'm stumped as to what to do.

I am planning on using these illustrations in Inkscape.

Thanks for any help! I have download limits from my ISP and don't want these 70-some MB to go to waste. :D Plus, I'd really like to use the illustrations!

wardeh,

I am not sure what is going on. Can you please confirm that you have extracted the archive so that you now have 30+ separate SVG or AI files. Once you have these, you should be able to open them directly with Inkscape. I don't think Inkscape can handle the AI versions. You would need Illustrator for these and you also need to follow the instructions to make sure that the files are placed in your Illustrator > Presets folder.

Could you also please tell me what program you are using that shows you the gobbledy-gook text file.

Thanks,
Adrian

Hi, Adrian! Thanks for offering to help.

I will hope to use the right words.

When I click on the download link (either for the full .ai or .svg archie with the .sit extension) I am given the choice to open with StuffItExpander or to Save the File. I chose "Open with StuffIt".

It downloads, then a text file opens with the Mac program TextEdit. The text file is full of gobbledy-gook characters.

I cannot see any other options to expand the archive. In the folder where it was saved, it is listed as only one file with a .sit extension and I cannot open it or expand it with anything I've tried.

The reason I tried the .ai version after the .svg (.sit) failed was that Inkscape has an option to save as .ai so I thought it might open them as well. I have not confirmed this.

But the StuffIt expander did not open this download either.

So, no, I have not been able to extract the collection at all. StuffIt will not extract the collection(s) and I don't know what else to try.

I am using a new MacBook Pro.

Thanks for your help. I might be missing something very obvious!

Hi again,

Thanks for the detailed explanation of what is happening. From what you described it sounds like StuffIt Expander is not opening the file, rather TextEdit is. It sounds to me like you need to open StuffIt Expander and then tell it to extract the .sit archive and that should take care of things. I am not sure why StuffIt is not automatically opening the .sit by default - I am not a Mac person.

Hope that helps,
Adrian

That does help, thank you.

I am baffled. I looked and looked for StuffIt and couldn't find it on my computer. Which is strange as my computer gave me the option to open with it. So I went and found StuffIt and then downloaded it. And now I can extract the package. I now can see all the .svg files and can open them in Inkscape.

The most confusing part of this is why my computer would ask me to use StuffIt when StuffIt was not actually on the computer? Well, that is a question for Apple to answer!

Thanks for your time!

Glad you got it sorted out. Can't tell you why your Mac gave you the option when you don't have it installed. For the next release of the libraries I will not be offering the .sit version anymore since it seems that Macs no longer support it by default.

Hope you enjoy the symbols.

Adrian

path64,

It is my understanding (not being a Mac user) that Macs now supports the .zip archive format by default. So I was thinking I would simply offer a .zip version for Mac users. If you or anyone else thinks this would be a problem, please let me know.

Thanks for your feedback,
Adrian
