request for ai version 9, or eps version?
« on: July 13, 2004, 02:46:06 am »
hi, it looks like you have a great resource on your hands. unfortunately, i'm part of the crowd still using illustrator version 9, and i currently don't have funds to upgrade to 10, or cs.

since your symbol application was developed using illustrator, would it be possible to export your symbols to "export > legacy" illustrator 9?  either ai, or eps files would be fine.

i'm doing some community and environmental mapping, and find your symbols extremely useful.

thanks. i also registered and downloaded the files, soyou guys have my info already.

.... ok... let me beg *please* provide raw .eps, or illustrator 9 .ai files :(

Hi Jeff,

I agree that there are probably many people out there with Illustrator 9 or another graphics packages that would find our symbols useful, so I have prepared eps files of all the symbol libraries (a page for each library). I expect you probably already know, but without Illustrator 10 or better these files won't have the ease of use of the new symbol palette capabilities. You will need to open the eps files and copy the symbol you want and paste it into your diagram.

You will need to enter the same username and password that you were given when you registered for the download.

Unfortunately I don't have Illustrator 9 so I haven't been able to test the files. Could you please get back to me so I can fix any problems, and subsequently post them on our download page.

Thanks,

Adrian

UPDATE March 2005 - We have just released two EPS and two SVG versions for users with Illustrator 9 or less or other vector illustration packages. These downloads are available after registering for the libraries.
Please see post (22nd March 2005) below for more details

hi,
thank you for providing the eps files.
I opened every file, examined each symbol, and enlarged a few.

The only (fatal) error I found was the located in the "everyday objects.eps" file. Each time I tried opening this file, it causes illustrator to hang, and subsequently crash. the other eps files opened without a problem.

aside from that, there was also a very minor cosmetic issue not worth mentioning, if the user does not have bakersignetbt-roman font installed on their computer, illustrator will warn and substitute with another font.

Hi guys

I downloaded all the eps files and they work perfectly, except that I get the same fatal error as mentioned above with the everyday objects.eps file. Other than that they opened without a problem and look great!

Nice work!

Hi Jeff and DT.

Finally we released two new EPS versions (PC Zip and MAC Sit archives) for users with Illustrator 9 or less or other vector illustration packages. These downloads are available after registering for the libraries. These contain all 1515 symbols from v5.1 of the libraries. Please note that although these versions include all the symbols contained in the normal versions, they cannot be accessed through the symbol libraries interface, thereby reducing convenience, but not the ultimate functionality of the symbols.

Please let me know if anyone has trouble using these in their vector illustration software.

Regards,

Adrian

Just another followup for everyone.

We have also created SVG versions of the libraries (zip & sit) for those users having problems with the eps version. Some graphics packages, especially on the Linux platform seem to have problems with the Illustrator eps format, but the SVG should work fine.

I have also just created a zip package containing the full set of our symbol libraries in Illustrator legacy eps v3 format. This format should work on all versions of Illustrator from 3 onwards, and I assume many other older vector packages which support the eps format. The problem with this version is, however, that many of the more complicated symbols which utilize gradients and other effects are either blank or incomplete. Many other symbols are now made up of lines in an attempt to duplicate the effect of the gradient. Unfortunately this is simply an artefact of this old eps format. I was going to provide this as a download option on our website, but given the poor quality of many of the symbols I have decided against that option.

If there are users who would like a copy of this version in either zip or sit archive format, please let me know and I will send you the link. Please make sure you are already registered for the Symbol Libraries via our website at http://ian.umces.edu/symbols.

However, I would definitely suggest that users upgrade to at least Illustrator 9 (preferably 10 or CS so you will have full support for the symbol palette functions) to enable access to the full quality version of the IAN Symbol Libraries, rather than this low quality legacy version.
