IAN's new look - tell us what you think

New IAN WebsiteThe Integration and Application Network website has had a substantial redesign to complement our new logo. The logo still maintains the original elements (mountains, estuaries, oceans) which represent our integrated approach to environmental problem solving. The website has a cleaner look and a simplified navigation structure. We encourage you to visit the new site and provide feedback through the form on our contact page.

Summer ecological forecast released

Summer Forecast NewsletterIAN and EcoCheck (NOAA-UMCES Partnership) in collaboration with the Chesapeake Bay Program and some of its partners (e.g. MD DNR) have just released the 2006 summer ecological forecast. Forecasts of Chesapeake Bay mainstem anoxic volume, harmful algal blooms in the Potomac River, and changes in aquatic grass cover over the summer period are provided. This is the second year that the forecast has been provided, with relatively accurate forecasts provided last year. A newsletter that summarizes the forecast can be found at the EcoCheck website.

NEEA workshop a success

NEEA workshop photoOn May 9-10, IAN and EcoCheck (NOAA-UMCES Partnership) in collaboration with NOAA’s Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment, convened the National Estuarine Eutrophication Assessment update workshop. The workshop included data entry into the online data collection tool and development of recommendations for a national strategy for research, monitoring, and management needed to address eutrophication. The workshop will result in a report due in September 2006 that assesses present eutrophic conditions and trends in condition since the early 1990s for 141 US systems, as well as recommendations for a national approach to protect these systems from further degradation.

Erasmus Mundus - Science Communication Class

Erasmus Mundus studentsErasmus Mundus Joint Master in Water and Coastal Management is an innovative program that integrates river-basin and coastal management, funded by the European Union. IAN staff Tim Carruthers and Jane Hawkey taught a one week unit on science communication and integrated ecosystem assessment in Faro, Portugal from May 8-12. The class consisted of 26 students from 18 countries with varied backgrounds including statistics, chemistry, and GIS, as well as biology. The diversity of experiences and backgrounds provided for rich discussions and diverse syntheses as well as an effective way to broadly disseminate tools for, and approaches to, science communication.
