Dancing with dugongs: Having fun and developing a practical philosophy for environmental teaching and research
Officially launched at Riversymposium 2013, this colorful eBook is available as a free download from IAN Press. Co-authored by Bill Dennison and the late Peter Oliver, it tells the story of their journey to better understand catchments, waterways, and people and how they interact. Looking after the environment should be fun, and there is a real need to reflect individually and with others on the 'how' and 'why' of our work. Articulating such a practical philosophy can help us to do our work better. Bill and Peter recognized the importance of science communication, empowering communities and working in schools and universities. Dancing with Dugongs is free through support from the International WaterCentre and the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science.
Ohio River Basin report card workshop newsletter
The Ohio River Basin report card workshop newsletter was published in January. Potential indicators for an assessment of management goals for the Mississippi River were determined at a workshop for the Ohio River Basin in December. This is the second in a series of newsletters that will document progress toward completing the report card through stakeholder meetings in all 6 sub-basins of the Mississippi River. The final list of indicators will be determined by several factors, including data availability and how well they represent achievement of management goals. Results from each sub-basin will be refined and integrated into a report card for the entire Mississippi River Basin.
Moreton Bay books now available for free from IAN Press
IAN Press has added five books to its digital library. These books focus on Moreton Bay in Southeast Queensland, Australia and were originally published between 1998 and 2005. Hard copies of these books are out of print. These five books are richly illustrated with photographs, maps, conceptual diagrams, and figures. As a whole, these books chronicle the development of the Healthy Waterways campaign and synthesize the science supporting the management efforts. The process of developing each of the books was presented as a blog series. The Healthy Waterways website provides current information and monitoring updates.
IAN welcomes Judith Hallowell
Judith is an Administrative Assistant in the business office in Annapolis. Having received her Masters in International Business from the University of South Carolina, Judith worked for IBM as a Systems Engineer educating and creating technical solutions for end users. Her commitment to volunteerism has provided many rewarding experiences ranging from teaching adult illiterates to coaching a school chess club in national championship tournaments. A lifelong learner, Judith enjoys exploring the outdoors, remodeling, and entertaining.
