Ecosystem report cards act as the ultimate synthesis tool for communicating vast amounts of information relevant to the general public and policy decision-makers. This pyramid shows where report cards fit within the spectrum of information density and information synthesis.

Often located in remote sites, US field stations rely on telecommunications to stay connected to their institutions. Field stations often offer classes, to students or the public, as well as conduct scientific research.

Satellite-tracked drifter
First annual release of the Maryland's Coastal Bays Report Card. These sensitive coastal lagoons received an overall grade of C+ for 2008. Scientists, the Maryland Coastal Bays Program, National Parks Service, state and local politicians, other dignitaries, and the general public gathered to hear the assessment which was based on water quality and other monitoring data and disseminated widely through various media. The Report Card was a collaboration between several entities, including the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, IAN, EcoCheck, and the Maryland Coastal Bays Program.
Bill gets interviewed
The 2008 Severn River Report Card Release. The report card summarizes 2008 water quality results, which are based on data collected by the Severn Riverkeeper Program. This report card helps to clarify the Severn's health, and provides instructions on what individuals can do to improve its condition. The release of this report card was attended by local, state, and federal representatives, Severn River Keepers, and IAN staff.
