Unidentified tropical fish found in stony coral in Australian waters.
Australian Tropical fish, underwater
Various coral fish interacting in underwater shot.
Chaetodon melannotus (Blackback butterflyfish)…
The black sea urchin, also called a long-spined sea urchin, is the most abundant and important herbivore on the coral reefs of the western Atlantic and Caribbean basin. When the population of these sea urchins is at a healthy level, they are the main grazers which prevent algae overgrowth of the reef.
Diadema antillarum (black sea urchin)
Diagram showing example indicators for nearshore marine habitat in the Pacific, including coral cover, coral health, fish biomass, fish richness, and water quality.

Illustration of Heliopora coerulea (Blue Coral), which is so named as the skeleton is blue. It is classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN due to overharvesting for the aquarium industry.

Cross-section of Lami Town in Fiji.
Fiji: Lami Town
Conceptual diagram illustrating Alligator Reef, which is limited in growth by the amount of exposed Pleistocene bedrock. The washing effect of water through the tidal pass has exposed peat and sandy sediments upon which coral reefs cannot become established.
Alligator Reef growth limitation

Florida Keys during the quaternary period
Conceptual diagram illustrating a coral polyp dividing by asexual budding to create a coral colony.
Formation of coral colony via asexual budding
Conceptual diagram illustrating the goliath grouper life cycle and movement of various life stages throughout the nearshore and reef environments.
Goliath grouper life cycle
Conceptual diagram illustrating a healthy coral reef ecosystem (left) and a biologically stressed coral reef ecosystem (right). Arrows indicate consumption or other negative impact to life corals.
Healthy vs. biologically stressed coral reef…
Conceptual diagram illustrating the life cycle of the Caribbean spiny lobster.
