Illustration of a ghost forest, which can be caused by sea-level rise, land subsidence, or both. As land subsides along the coast, trees can drown in saturated soils, creating ghost forests. Salt-water intrusion into groundwater can also cause salt-intolerant trees to die.

Ghost crab pot (lacking a marker buoy) recovered in Maryland's Coastal Bays. Ghost fishing results in a number of mortalities for fish, blue crabs, and other estuarine or marine organisms.

This unusual and scarce plant, Monotropa uniflora, was found in a dark, moist forest of the Adirondack mountains of upstate NY. It does not contain chlorophyll and is parasitic.
