Concrete slabs, shown on the left side of the photo, can be spaced apart to provide wildlife access to and from wetlands and uplands while still providing some degree of shoreline protection. This innovative approach is generally considered an improvement over the common rip rap shown on the right side of this photo, which is a significant and often insurmountable obstacle to wildlife.
