First annual release of the Maryland's Coastal Bays Report Card. These sensitive coastal lagoons received an overall grade of C+ for 2008. Scientists, the Maryland Coastal Bays Program, National Parks Service, state and local politicians, other dignitaries, and the general public gathered to hear the assessment which was based on water quality and other monitoring data and disseminated widely through various media. Cutting the cake for the release of Shifting Sands, the book on Maryland's Coastal Bays, released by IAN Press. The celebratory cake was designed to look like the cover of the book, which can be seen to the right. Shifting Sands contains information regarding the history of these coastal lagoons, current water quality and biotic integrity information, and recommendations to preserve and restore these fragile ecosystems.
