One Mile Harbour, Moreton Bay
Bill Dennison · Clouds drifting slowly across the Bay
Lorikeets swooping and diving, flashes of red
Crows calling out and generally having their way
Four wheel drives with fishing and surfing gear passing by
Rusty utes with dogs hanging out the window sputtering along
Aboriginal middens with gum trees standing high
A small clump of mangroves standing firmly on the shore
Dark patches of seagrass underneath clear water
Light patches where dugong come to feast some more
The ever-changing tide flats, half water and half land
A Yabby pumper with bucket and pump poking along
Platoons of soldier crabs scuttling over the sand
Boats in the harbor, hanging on moorings and swinging
The water taxi zipping along, threading the channel
Tinnies, sailboats, and trawlers coming and going
Amity Banks on the horizon beyond the sand bar
Shimmering Rainbow Channel stretching toward Amity Point
Moreton Island in the distance with its sand patch scar
The Bay is here and now, green, brown and blue
But the Bay is timeless, ancient and mysterious
Inviting us to become immersed in its milieu
