Land Ocean Interactions of the Coastal Zone workshop

LOICZ bookThe Integration and Application Network staff recently ran a workshop on developing conceptual syntheses using conceptual diagrams at the LOICZ II (Land Ocean Interactions in the Coastal Zone) conference in the Netherlands in late June. A synthesis of the 10-year LOICZ I program was recently published, entitled "Coastal Fluxes in the Anthropocene." This synthesis aims to address how changes in land use, sea level rise, and climate will alter coastal ecosystems, and includes conceptual diagrams produced by IAN staff. This book is available from Springer and copies will soon be placed in the libraries at AL, CBL, and HPL. LOICZ is one of the eight core projects of IGBP (International Geosphere-Biosphere Program) and their latest newsletter (No. 61, March 2005) contains a summary of the LOICZ science plan and implementation strategy, including use of conceptual diagrams.

UMCES Publications Database

Literature DatabaseWe have recently published a new online database which includes over 2,900 citations by UMCES faculty, staff, and students. For current Faculty (Tenured/Tenure Track as well as Research Professor Ranks) it includes their entire journal record that is available through ISI. The database interface allows for detailed searching and browsing of all records. You can view the full record, email a link to colleagues, format citations in popular journal formats (including the ability to create text citations and generate a complete reference list for your manuscript), and export records directly to an Endnote file. PDFs of most new articles are available directly from the database (from an UMCES or VPN connected computer). If you'd like to upload PDFs of your papers for inclusion in the database, please contact Adrian Jones (ajones@ca.umces.edu).

IAN conceptual diagram symbol libraries hit 10,000 downloads

10000 downloadsIn late June, the IAN symbol libraries reached a milestone of 10,000 downloads, from people in 177 countries and 50 states in the USA. The IAN symbol libraries contain over 1,500 custom made symbols (in 32 categories) designed specifically for enhancing science communication skills through the development of conceptual diagrams. The aim of the libraries is to make them a standard resource for scientists, resource managers, community groups, and environmentalists worldwide. The IAN symbol libraries are available for download completely cost and royalty free.
