Conceptual diagram illustrating a modern central collection and wastewater treatment plant.
Modern Wastewater Treatment
Conceptual diagram illustrating differences in nutrient transport between benthic algae and seagrasses.
Seagrass nutrient transport
Conceptual diagram illustrating a virus tracer study demonstrating that Class V injection wells can cause contamination of surface waters within the environment due to the porous nature of the limestone substrate.
Virus tracer study
Triptych comparison of a river mouth, showing a pristine environment (left) with subsequent sediment, nutrients, and toxin inputs leading to an unhealthy and unproductive environment with a hardened shoreline (right).

Multiple impacts threaten the natural resources of the Verde Island Passage. Human activity and natural threats include overfishing, destructive and illegal fishing practices, unsustainable coastal development, unsustainable land use practices, and natural disasters. Climate change threats include increased sea surface temperature, sea level rise, increased storm frequency and intensity, increased rainfall, and ocean acidification.

Outhouse
This is an example of a hardended shoreline with residential development very close to the water. As an example, this type of development is often on septic systems which can leach and input nutrients into the nearby waters.

Manure composting bunker
Conceptual diagram illustrating a mathematical model which represents nitrogen inputs and exports in coastal bays.
Nitrogen exchange in a coastal bay
Conceptual diagram illustrating the differences between habitats in natural streams versus man-made ditches including the vegetation, water temperature, and the relative debris that contribute toward a habitat.
Stream habitat vs. ditch habitat
Conceptual diagram illustrating the process in which wastewater is treated by sewage treatment systems versus traditional and advanced septic systems.
Wastewater treatment
Drainage ditch in a agricultural field near Ruthsburg, Maryland. Ditch is being monitored by a team of scientists to see the amount of nutrients that comes off the fields.
