Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument - NRCA

We are working with the National Park Service to understand the current condition of natural resources in Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument (KAWW). KAWW was designated as a national monument in 2016 and protects 87,500 acres of mountains, forests, and rivers in northern Maine. The scenic views and abundant wildlife make this a popular recreation destination for outdoor enthusiast.

Offshore Assateague Water Quality

IAN has teamed up with oceanographers at our home campus of Horn Point Laboratory and at the Department of Natural Resources in order to revisit a growing concern of algal blooms off Assateague Island National Seashore on the Southern Eastern Shore. IAN's role in this project involves synthesizing data collected offshore and helping to establish relevant thresholds for offshore nutrient data, as well as aiding in communication of the studies data and findings.

Resource Assessments for Managements Strategies is an ongoing project aimed to identify the best opportunities to preserve the environmentally, culturally and historically significant resources within and across the National Capital Region parks. This assessment strategy is being implemented over two phases: Phase I is currently underway and focuses primarily on the status and management recommendations of park-specific resources.

Resource managers and interpretive staff in the Pacific Island Network have partnered with IAN staff, students, educators, and cultural experts to develop an online module that explores our intricate connections to coral reefs and climate change. By synthesizing park science and integrating cultural knowledge, the module illustrates the coral ecosystems in the Pacific islands, the threats that climate change poses, and how changes to coral reefs may impact our daily lives.
