A 48-page synthesis booklet titled "This is your shield...this is your estuary" was produced by The Water Institute of the Gulf and IAN. This effort integrated scientific and traditional knowledge, capturing issues that arose in a series of community workshops in coastal Louisiana. This synthesis addresses the issue of building community and coastal resilience to a changing Louisiana coastline through restoration of key ecosystem functions. Since coastal communities of Louisiana are highly vulnerable to coastal change, building resilience is key for their future sustainability.
IAN completes first annual report: IAN Report Card 2015
IAN recently released its first annual report in the form of a report card. IAN staff reflected back on accomplishments from 2015 and plans to expand the report card in the years to come. Indicators were developed in three categories: social impacts, ecological outcomes, and partnership satisfaction. IAN received an overall grade of a B+. This report card was produced with input from external advisors Tina Bishop and Peter Tuddenham, from the College of Exploration.
Researchers and stakeholders address coastal vulnerability and freshwater security, a Belmont forum synthesis document
As part of IAN's role in the facilitation of the Belmont Forum Synthesis Workshop last December, a synthesis document was co-produced with the participants. This Workshop summary provides a brief overview of the 13 projects in Coastal Vulnerability and Freshwater Security, identifies common themes that emerged, and provides recommendations for future Belmont Forum projects. This newsletter represents a synthesis of the projects' results, revealing real solutions for informed and deliberative decision-making about sustainable resource use and development.
IAN welcomes Aera Hoffman
Aera is from Juneau, Alaska and spent her life growing up near the ocean, glaciers and mountains. Hiking, camping, fishing, and crabbing are activities all Juneau residents love, even when it rains. Which it does, a lot! Within the last couple of years, she decided to make the switch from accounting to user experience design. It was the need to work in a creative field that explored the human connection to digital products that pushed her to make the switch. She is a self-professed lifelong learner and loves to research anything from books to blenders and is excited to parlay the research love into great work for the UMCES team. When she's not reading or dreaming up new travel destinations she loves to spend time with her family and her nieces and nephews. She welcomes any and all sports talk, especially during March Madness and the NFL or college playoffs. Aera and her husband are excited to build a life in Annapolis and explore the community and its surrounding areas.
On the Horizon
- Bill Dennison will be presenting a talk titled "Development of a resource stewardship strategy tool for the National Capital Region" at the George Wright Conference. The conference will take place April 2-7, 2017 in Norfolk, Virginia.
- Simon Costanzo is traveling to Wuhan, China April 3-11 to participate in a two-day report card training of WWF China staff and stakeholders in preparation for a potential basin health report card within the Yangtze River basin.
