The 28th Biennial CERF Conference was held in Richmond, Virginia from November 9–13th with the theme this year being "Estuaries: Traditions and Transitions." I attended with five fellow IAN staff, and during the week, we had a chance to both discuss our experiences with co-production and actionable science as well as hear from others about their unique approaches to this process.
September is National Preparedness Month, an initiative aimed at educating Americans about readiness for emergency and disaster situations that can happen anytime and anywhere. Knowing when a disaster is likely to occur and understanding that changes in climate may exacerbate the frequency and intensity of severe weather are critical for navigating a variety of circumstances.
The second annual Scientists Serving Communities workshop brought together UMD researchers with expertise in climate adaptation and resilience and connected them with regional stakeholders and community members who will use the information to strengthen their communities. This approach to science actively deconstructs the “ivory tower syndrome” that is often present in academia and encapsulates IAN's work on scientific application and community engagement.
It was around 6 am on a cool May morning as we waited outside for our driver. We were a mere few feet away from a young male lion the previous night and still in disbelief. When our driver arrived, we loaded into the vehicle and made the bumpy ride towards South Luangwa National Park to admire Zambia’s wildlife and marvelous landscapes.
In early October, UMCES IAN hosted two Patuxent Stakeholder Listening Sessions as part of Phase 1 of developing a Patuxent River and Watershed Socio-environmental Report Card.

On a sunny Thursday in July, over 40 community members throughout the greater Frederick County in Maryland participated in the very first Potomac Watershed Open House.
The COAST Card team spent the day learning about various locations in the Potomac River Watershed to provide a historical context for the environmental assessment of the region.
